getting my rails work in
June 20th, 2007
here are some projects that I have completed.
Grettings all. First off, thanks for checking out my site. Its real nice to see folks visiting from overseas. =)
here are 3 projects I have completed for myself.
The first is Tristatepost.com. This project is a classifieds style site where users can post items they would like to advertise for the tristate area(nj, pa, and del).
The second project I completed is your basic free image hosting site, Pical.us This site has all the features you would expect to see in most image sites. view latest photos, most popular, random tags, and most popular tags, etc…The site uses amazon s3 to handle the bandwidth.
The third project I created is called Jotterlog.com. The site’s main purpose is to help users create notes and manage their notes. Each account has the ability to make notes public or private. If they are public, they get their own friendly readable url. I used plenty of rjs.
These are my first sites. I probably rewrote the classifieds site 3 times before letting it ‘be’. Since it was my first project, I learned plenty of tricks or proper ways of DRY’ing out code. Each rewrite, I probably cut about 40% of lines of code! The image hosting site took me about a saturday to write up, and the jotterlog site took about a weeks worth of coding part time. I program around an hour a day during the work week. Sometimes it gets challenging especially when you wake up at 6am, drive 45 minutes to work(sometimes an 1.5 due to traffic), work for 8hrs, make the drive home, workout, cook, eat dinner, spend some time with wifey, clean up, etc…by the time you know it, you want to sleep, but you know nothing will get accomplished if you do. however, when I compare my life to other folks, I have it many times easy!
A little background, its been about 9 months since I jumped into web development. When I first started, I didn’t even have basic understanding of html, css, javascript, apache, web hosting, mysql, let alone ruby and rails. Now, I just have a tad bit of understanding. Most of my knowledge in programming is in c++, so I spent alot of time learning the world of web development, *there is alot to know. in addition to, im a reaaalll slow learner.
Now I got those sites out the way, time to concentrate on bigger projects. If you have any questions about any functionality of some of my sites, drop me a message. I would be glad to share.
